Between 1915 and 1917 the border areas intheJulian Alps, Friuli, Gorizia and the Carso between Slovenia and Italy became a bloody battlefield of the Great War. This area received the name the Isonzo Front after the nearby River Isonzo. In twelve epic Isonzo battles hundred thousands of soldiers were killed, the villages destroyed and the landscape devastated.
Since then almost a century haspassed. The towns and villages have been rebuilt, former battlefields have slowly recovered from their war wounds and grown again, but numerous marks of the war have remained visible until the present day, such as military cemeteries, monuments, plaques, military roads trenches etc
The purpose of the website Pro Hereditate (Latin 'for heritage') is to discover, research, introduce, promote and protect the unique heritage of the Isonzo Front, which was built during the course of the war and has been preserved until today, the era of internet.
The growing database of web descriptions of the heritage is divided into the objects and the historical battlefields, whose presentation is enriched by many museums collections and supplemented by many catalogues of sources.Last but not least, there is a forum, where we are looking forwardto your responses and your helpin enriching our databases with new and interesting information. |
