The Italian and Austrian soldiers have left on the Isonzo Front numerous remnants and objects - trenches, caverns, buildings and their ruins, military roads, water containers but also the monuments, plaques and picturesque war graffiti.
The chapter 'Objects' of the website Pro Hereditate is dedicated mainly to war memorials, which we can find in the trenches andcaverns, along the former military paths on the former battlefield or in the hinterland.Thesecontain written messages and artistic decorations.
From the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Sea there have been partially or fully preserved until today at least nine hundred (900) of them. The war photographs show us that at the end of the war their number was at least a couple of times greater, but unfortunately in the meantime most of them have been destroyed by either human hand or nature or both.
The growingnumberof war memorials, which are slowly being catalogued onto the website Pro Hereditateandinto the documented and public domain,shows a strong desire of thecombatantsoldiers to express themselvesartisticallyrather than destructivelyand theirconsciousdesire to leave on the battlefield of death at least a single personal trace of their existence.
Maybe we canrecognisein these war memorials and plaques, these most powerful objects of the heritage of the Great War,the individual and collective testaments of their authors.
