C0020 - Tolmin - The Tolmin Museum
Text description
Since 1950 the Tolmin Museum is housed in the listed Coronini Mansion from the 17th century in the centre of the town. The Coroninis owned the property until 1848, when Alois Silverius Kremer, knight of Auenrode, bought it together with the castle and buildings. In the next year he sold most of the property to the local peasants and the remains of the estate were bought in 1871 by Johann von Permerstein and the knight Filippo Persoglia. Three years later they divided the mansion. The Permersteins owned the part which is today the Krn Hotel, and the Persoglias owned the part of the building occupied in the 19th century by the court and later by the museum. The changes of owners were usually accompanied by rebuilding. The 1976 earthquake caused serious damage to the building. Renovation was started in 1993 and in 1995 the Tolmin Museum Collection was opened to the public. The building was again damaged by the 1998 earthquake. In 1958 the Tolmin Museum was merged with the Gorica Museum. The Tolmin Department, later renamed the Tolmin Museum Collection, operated under the Goriška Museum, Nova Gorica until April 2000, when it was re-established as an independent public institution. Tolmin museum holdings consist of the archeological exhibition of the objects from the Hallstatt and Roman eras: clay and stone urns, a tombstone and a fire-place, the art history exhibition which presents keystones from the 15th and 16th centuries, sculptures made by unknown woodcarvers and sculptors from the 16th to the 19th century, and oil paintings on canvas from the 18th and 19th centuries and the ethnological exhibition on the second floor presents a selection of the ethnological heritage of the Tolmin area, e.g. furnishings of peasant homes, utensils for making cheese and butter and other farming implements. Folk art is represented by painted chests, cradles, beehive panels, ornaments on butter models, frescoes on facades, and also by Shrovetide masks, including typical masks from Drežnica.
