A0005 - Lokvica - Cemetery chapel on the abandoned Italian war cemetery
Text description
Abandoned Italian war cemetery. Only the cemetery chapel and an inscription plaque remained.

Between September and October 1916 this area was the scene of the Seventh and Eight Isonzo Battles. The Italians tried to capture the Austro-Hungarian exposed positions on Quota 265, which blocked the further advance towards Fajtji vrh. The Italian infantry brigades "Granatieri di Sardegna", "Lombardia", "Toscana", "Pinerolo" and "Trapani" tried several times with heavy attacks, but they all failed. The quota was taken only during the Ninth Isonzo Battles, when they captured also Cerje, Pecinko and Pecino and therefore opened themselves a path to the Fajtji vrh.

The inscription on the tomb stone remembers the Italian soldiers who lost their lives in this offensive: "In memory of fallen heroes, who gave their young lives for the fatherland – 2nd November 1916".

Location description
On the Miren-Opatje selo road we turn left at the car park (Pri vrhu), continue further east for about 1 km towards Cerje, where we find on the right side of the road a small and rarely used track. After approx 130 metres we arrive in the valley with the chapel (former Italian war cemetery).
Condition
Over time the chapel had decayed and fallen over but has recently been re-erected and placed in it's original position by the members of the local historical association.
