A0023 - Temnica - A signature of an Austro-Hungarian private in the Munitions Cave near Temnica
Text description
A signature of an Austro-Hungarian private in the Munitions Cave near Temnica. The inscription on fresh wet cement was probably left by a soldier who took part in the alterations of the natural caves for the usage of the Austro-Hungarian Army.
The Austrians named the cave the Munitionshöhle, because it served as the ammunition depot. It was made up of four natural caves: Vorhöhle 1 in 2, Offenerhöhle and Haupthöhle. During the war these caves have been combined together, floor flattened and the ceiling protected with a thick concrete layer and both entrances have been widen. Inside were placed tracks for the transportation of ammunition. They also planned a connection to the military railway Dutovlje – Kostanjevica, which was only a few hundred paces away, but the project was abandoned because in the autumn of 1916 the front line came dangerously close to the cave. Afterwards the cave was only used as a shelter for military units. It even had its own water supply from the nearby military aqueduct, natural ventilation and a steady temperature. During the war there were ten officer's and four hundred and eighty soldier's beds. Permanently it housed an additional 260 soldiers and officers, together this totalled approximately 750 men.
